Zoom is a video conferencing app that you'll use for live class sessions each week with your instructor and your classmates. You can use Zoom on your Computer, phone, or tablet to join these sessions. Use one of these links to download Zoom for your device:
To join your Live Sessions for class, click on the Live Session links that you'll find in the weekly material:
These links will have the Zoom icon, and list the date and time for the session. It's important to note that all times will be in Central Standard Time (CST). Clicking the Live Session link will open your Zoom app and bring you to the session. It may ask for a screen name when joining, and this is the name that will display for you during the session.
Once you're inside, you can toggle your microphone and camera on and off with the buttons in the bottom left corner:
When you join a session for class, you might be muted immediately. Don't take this personally! Class sessions can be chaos if everyone's microphones are on, so the instructor may mute everyone to reduce noise. If you'd like to turn your mic on to speak, click on the microphone to unmute yourself. If you have more than one camera or microphone on your device, you may need to select one by clicking the arrows next to these buttons.
You can also find the Chat window by clicking on the Chat icon at the bottom:
The Chat will often be used by students to ask questions, and the instructor might also use it to post links to other materials.
Sometimes the instructor will share their screen to show materials and discuss them, and you can also do this:
Sharing your screen is a way to show everyone in the session something on your own device. It lets the other participants see whatever you can on your own screen.
To leave a meeting, click on Leave Meeting in the corner of the meeting window.
This will close the window and remove you from the session. At the end of your live sessions for class you will be removed automatically, but clicking this button will remove you immediately.
